Four Keys to a Healthy Mind

Do you ever get knocked off your schedule? Unavoidable things pop up that divert your attention from goals? Or from being your best self?

Life and a 4-month-old puppy have certainly knocked me off mine, leaving minimal time for the practices that ensure my well-being.

Well-being is a skill, according to world renowned neuroscientist, Dr. Richard J. Davidson, Founder & Director of the Center for Healthy Minds at the University of Wisconsin–Madison.

Every human being is born with the capacity to be well, and research confirms that this is a skill that can be taught.

Why is it important to develop these skills now?

Look around you. Does the world appear well?

Or do we appear to be teetering on the brink of another period of tremendous loss and suffering? As if the lessons from WW2 have been forgotten.

The most effective way to change the path we’re headed down is to become more skillful yourself – to embody what you would like to see in the world, even at times when triggered or challenged.

“Change Your Mind, Change the World.” — Dr. Richard J.Davidson

As part of my program at Brown University, we have access to a wonderful webinar series with the latest thinkers and top experts in all aspects of the science of mindfulness.

The latest in the series was by Dr. Davidson who discussed his program, HealthyMinds, and offered these 4 pillars to developing the skill of wellbeing:

🔑 Awareness

Be present. Train your mind to be more calm and focused with meditation training to strengthen mindfulness, attention, and self-awareness.

🔑 Connection

Feel connected. Develop skills to strengthen appreciation, kindness, and compassion through building connection skills.

🔑 Insight

Get curious. Learn how your sense of self shapes your emotions and reactions, and practice self-inquiry to decrease stress and emotional reactivity.

🔑 Purpose

Stay motivated. Strengthen your values and principles and learn simple skills to apply them in everyday life.

If the idea of applying neuroscience for a healthier mind appeals to you, check out this free, award winning Healthy Minds Program app or watch Dr. Davidson’s talk where he outlines a path to well-being for anyone.

Wishing you a week of enhanced well-being.

Let your wisdom lead,

Robin
